How to Replace Recessed Lighting with Flush Mount Lighting: A Minka Lavery Contractor’s Checklist

Here’s the thing: replacing a recessed light with a flush mount isn’t conceptually hard. You take down one, put up the other. But the reality? It’s kind of a minefield.

In my 12 years coordinating residential lighting upgrades (maybe 400 or so jobs, give or take), I’ve seen this go sideways more times than I can count. Not because the installers weren’t capable—but because nobody stopped to check for the specific gotchas that come with this swap.

So, here’s a 6-step checklist I put together for guys like me who need to do this fast, right, and without a callback. It’s built around what I see on the ground, including some specific Minka Lavery models like the nine-light chandelier 3849-66a or a Kichler chandelier garland arrangement.

When You Should Use This Checklist

Step 1: Confirm the Can Has a Junction Box (The Step Everyone Forgets)

The assumption: Every recessed light has a junction box up there, so you can just wire the new fixture in.

The reality: Not all recessed cans have a separate junction box. Some have the wiring integrated into the housing. If you cut the wire and remove the whole can, you lose your box and you’re now working without a legal connection point.

Checkpoint: Look in the attic or remove the trim and look for a separate box mounted to the side of the can. If you don’t see one (or you can’t tell), don’t assume. Actually check.

I had a job in March 2024 where a client asked me to swap out a basic 6-inch can for a Minka-Lavery nine light chandelier 3849-66a. We opened the ceiling, and guess what? No junction box. The wiring was built into the can’s housing. We had to cut out the can, install a new fan-rated box, and patch the ceiling. That added 2 hours and $350 to what should have been a 45-minute swap. Step 2: Check the Ceiling for Structural Support (No Really, Do This)

The rule: Anything over 10 pounds needs a fan-rated box, which is designed to hold more weight and provide lateral support. If you try to hang a 15-pound chandelier from a standard plastic box that was only holding up a 2-pound can, you’re going to have a problem. Eventually.

Checkpoint: Check the weight of your new fixture before you touch the old one. The Minka-Lavery nine light chandelier 3849-66a is a solid piece—I’d guess maybe 18-20 pounds with the glass. That needs a box that’s anchored to a joist.

The surprise for me wasn’t finding junction boxes—it was finding how many were mounted off-center or to just drywall. In one case, a recessed can was held up by metal clips into the drywall itself. Fine for a 3-pound can. Not fine for a decorative chandelier.

Step 3: Power Off and Test (Like, Actually Test)

Why the extra step? Recessed lights sometimes share neutrals with other circuits. You can kill one breaker, but if the hots and neutrals are crossed, the neutral wire in the box you’re working on could still carry voltage from a different circuit. That’s rare, but I’ve seen it once in maybe 200 jobs.

Actually, that’s not quite right. We didn’t lose a client, but we did lose a Saturday once because someone (me, honestly) didn’t test correctly. The lesson stuck.

Step 4: Remove the Recessed Can (But Leave the Junction Box)

If the can has a separate junction box, the process is straightforward:

  1. Disconnect the wire between the can and the box.
  2. Remove the can from the ceiling. Usually these are held by springs or metal clips.
  3. Leave the junction box in place—or mount it to a nearby joist if it’s loose.

If the can and box are one piece, you need to remove the whole assembly. That means cutting the wires at the source (after turning power off) and installing a new box. I recommend a retro-fit box that clamps into the ceiling from below.

Checkpoint: Leave at least 6 inches of wire sticking out of the box. This is code in many jurisdictions, and it gives you room to work when wiring the new fixture.

Step 5: Wire the New Fixture—but Plan the Drops (This Saves Time)

Now you wire the new flush mount fixture the same way you’d wire any light: green to ground, white to neutral, black to hot. But here’s the thing most people skip: planning the drops.

If you’re replacing a single recessed can with a linear chandelier—say, a Minka Lavery linear fixture that’s 3 to 6 feet long—you might need to move the junction box. The drop point for the chandelier might not be centered where the recessed can was. You might need to relocate the box along the joist, which means patching the old hole and cutting a new one.

The numbers said I should just install the chandelier at the old location. My gut said it would look off center in the room. I went with my gut and moved the box. Turned out the room layout was 2 inches off from what the blueprint said. That 2 inches would have driven the homeowner crazy. There’s something satisfying about a fixture that’s perfectly centered, even if it costs an extra hour of work.

Checkpoint: For a Minka-Lavery bath wall light or a mini chandelier, you can often use the existing box location. For linear or large chandeliers, plan ahead.

Step 6: Secure, Test, and Check for Jank

Wire everything up, secure the fixture to the box (or to the support bracket if you’re using a fan-rated box), then turn the power back on.

  • Does it glow steady, no flicker?
  • Does it sit flush against the ceiling, no gaps?
  • Is the glass or shade secure, not wobbly?

If your fixture uses LED, don’t be surprised if the dimming is different. Most Minka Lavery fixtures now come with LED drivers that may require a compatible dimmer (usually ELV or trailing-edge). If the light flickers, you might not have a bad driver—you might just need a new dimmer switch.

Common Mistakes I See on Every Job

  • Forgetting the weight rating: As I said, hanging a heavy fixture from a standard box is dangerous. If your new light is over 10 pounds, use a fan-rated box.
  • Ignoring the drops: If you’re replacing a recessed can with a chandelier garland setup or a linear fixture, plan where the drops will go. The light needs to hit the table or island, not the floor.
  • Skipping the dimmer check: LEDs work with different dimmers. If you install a Minka Lavery chandelier with an integrated LED and use a standard incandescent dimmer, you might get buzzing or flickering. Test it before you call the job done.
  • Mounting flush mount fixtures on a sloped ceiling without a canopy: Some flush mounts have a flat canopy designed for flat ceilings. If your ceiling is angled, you need a sloped ceiling adapter or a fixture with a swivel mount. The Kichler chandelier garland, if it’s a certain style, might not be designed for sloped ceilings unless specified.

One last thing: my experience is based on about 200 residential replacement jobs, mostly in single-family homes. If you’re working in commercial spaces or with industrial ceilings, your experience might differ. I can’t speak to commercial code requirements—those can be stricter. But for residential? This checklist works.
