Why I Told Our Designer to Stop Specifying Minka Lavery Outdoor Lights by Look Alone

I'll say it plainly: most of the lighting specifications I review focus on the wrong details. Our design team falls in love with a fixture's look and glosses over the specifications that determine whether it will actually work. After tracking every lighting order we placed in 2024, I'm more convinced than ever that the visual is only the starting point—what matters is the measurable specification behind it.

In fact, I've spent the past 6 years managing procurement for a mid-sized hospitality design firm, which means I've reviewed a lot of lighting specifications—and I've signed off on more orders than I can count for Minka Lavery fixtures alone. This isn't a critique of the brand. It's a critique of how we as buyers evaluate it. We get distracted by the word "rustic" or "organic" and skip the questions that actually affect the project.

The Two Questions Nobody Asks

When a client asks for a Minka Lavery outdoor light, they're usually thinking about a sconce or a pendant for a covered porch. But here's what I've learned from hundreds of orders: the question is not simply "which style"—the question is whether the fixture is rated for the environment.

In March 2024, a junior designer sent me a spec for "downlight LED" and it turned out to be an adjustable eyeball fixture. Not what we needed for the wall-washing application. That's the level of ambiguity we're dealing with in the industry. The term 'downlight' describes direction, not function. It does not tell you about glare control, dimming compatibility, or whether the trim will even fit your ceiling construction.

This is also where I need to challenge one of the common marketing claims in the lighting industry: that LED equals energy savings automatically. A fixture that produces light only where you need it does save money. A fixture that produces too wide a beam, or that's installed in a space with high ceilings without proper optics, won't deliver the expected savings. The "energy efficient" label is only accurate when the distribution matches the application. What you're really paying for, in my experience, is proper light distribution, not just the LED chip.

Is a Grow Light Different Than a Regular Light?

It's a question I hear from our hospitality clients who want to add interior plants. And my answer is always the same: yes, but not for the reason everyone thinks. A grow light is different because of its spectral output and intensity—not because it looks special.

Regular lighting, even high-end Minka Lavery fixtures, uses LEDs designed to render colors for human vision. Grow lights, on the other hand, are designed to deliver photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the wavelengths plants actually use. Most standard fixtures lack the intensity to drive photosynthesis in anything but low-light plants.

This matters from a procurement perspective because we've had clients install a beautifully layered lighting scheme, including decorative fixtures, and wonder why their plants are dying. The lighting looked great to humans. But the human-centric spectrum, no matter how high the color rendering index, is not the same as a horticultural spectrum. You can pay $1,200 for an architectural fixture that does very little for a plant, or you can buy a $200 grow light that does exactly what it needs to. Paying more doesn't solve the wrong spectrum.

But What About the Budget?

  • Standardize chandelier height documentation at the beginning of a project. Not as a bullet point in a spec sheet, but as a drawing note with a required clearance dimension.
  • Request the photometric file for every LED fixture. If the manufacturer can't provide a photometric file, we can't evaluate the fixture properly for the space. It's a non-negotiable requirement.
  • For downlight LED selections, document the beam angle, lumen output, and dimming compatibility in writing. If you don't, the fixture is selected on appearance alone, and that's a blind spot.

But when you're working on a deadline—and we always are—the uncertainty of "we'll make it work on site" is a risk I'm no longer willing to take. The industry is moving toward more rigorous specifications, not fewer. As of early 2025, with the continued growth in integrated LED architecture, the gap between decorative fixtures and engineered fixtures is narrowing. But you can only benefit from that if you ask the right questions at the right time.

After six years of analyzing purchase orders and auditing installations, I've come to one conclusion: the certainty of a well-specified fixture is worth every dollar of the premium. The cost of fixing a mistake is always higher than the cost of asking a better question. That's true for Minka Lavery fixtures, and it's true for any other brand in the industry.
